Episode #70 First and foremost its our first english speaking episode and since it is our 70th episode we invited a cracker of a guest. Mark from Scotland is joining us today and talks to us about his remarkable journey of playing Rugby in Bolivia, building up the rugby infrastructure over there, his chat with Gregor Townsend and about the first official test match of Bolivia in which he featured as a captain. Mark is giving us details about how it feels to sit between 16 to 32 hours on a bus to play a club rugby match, to change altitude from 400m to 3,200m on the same day, to weld your own scrum machine and to sew your own tackle pads. For Vivian, Donal and Georg it put a lot of things in perspective to say at least. Thanks Mark for being such a great guest. If you want to support Mark and rugby in Bolivia head over to their gofundme page and give what you can to help those guys out. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/bolivianrugby

Ja, well, so a few weeks ago when we did some research for our podcast, I came across the BBC Rugby Union page, which I occasionally check for some rugby news in terms of British rugby.

02 And then I found this headline, Meet the Scotsman who is captaining the Bolivian rugby team. And it immediately caught my attention. And I thought, whoa, that must be a crazy interesting story to tell. I was wondering, how does a Scotsman come to Bolivia? I can imagine how. But then set up a rugby union there and play there. So that's why I just stalked him. I tracked him down. Mark Cameron is his name. It was kind of easy then to find him via Twitter, Instagram. And I texted him and I asked him, Hey Mark, we're doing this German podcast. We have about five to ten listeners. And are you keen on being our guest and talk about rugby in Bolivia? und Ihr story und er agreed on it und hier ist er jetzt.

50 Welcome on the pod, Marc. Danke sehr. Well, he never mentioned there was only 5-10 listeners, but you know, that's okay. Yeah, he likes to play it down. It's actually 6-7. So, Mark, you're from Scotland originally. I am, yes. Where about from Scotland? From East Lothian, so just to the east of Edinburgh. Ah, okay, cool. And you've played rugby in Scotland, I assume? Yes, yeah, I've played, I guess, Seit ich über fünf Jahre alt bin.

A lange Zeit. Okay, cool, cool. 15 Jahre ago, so in 2005. Did you go in 2005 to South America or did that happen before?

41 Before. I came to South America first in 2001. Just when I finished school, I did a gap year. I came to Argentina. How old were you roughly there? I was 18. 18, okay. After high school, finishing gap year, Argentina. How was your Spanish back then? I didn't speak any. All I could do was introduce myself. so I was supposed to be teaching English in Argentina but I think I learned much more Spanish than I taught English Just checking guys, are we listening to Donal's little kid in the background or to your kid Mark? It's mine, sorry Oh no, in front of it, oh no, just checking I've got a one year old baby and he's not very happy just now I've got a baby as well but I think he's getting ready to go off to bed so it's a bit different Okay.

29 Also 11 months, so close enough. Okay, mine's 14 months and it's lunchtime here for him. It's bad time for him. So we were really excited when we saw the article and Big G was saying as well, obviously about being really interested, such a crazy headline.

Ich habe mir auch sehr viele andere Brits in my time playing rugby here. There's not many of us. Okay. Sorry, Vivian, what was your question? How was rugby back then? When I'm imagining only two rugby teams and let's say there were about, in each team, 20, 30 players and they just played against each other. How was rugby back then? Yeah, so it was a lot of training and not much playing. This is what we have right now in Corona times.

So that was quite a challenge as well, to play three full games in a day. It was pretty hard. Three full 80-minute games? It was maybe 60-minute games. It would come down a little bit. Ah, well, that's still... Yeah, so it's still a lot of logic. And how was the quality at the start there? I mean, when you came in and you said there were two teams in Santa Cruz and mostly dominated by Argentinians and Bolivians, how was from your Scottish high school experience, or in general from your Scottish experience, Wie viel Yoursatra rubber habt化 Gloria völlig曾lls convection scoutxx精lichkeit grundlos видел homemадц

39 aber dann wir haben fast fast backersaus und dann get the ball in the space und dann take advantage of our backs und ich nicht genau genau genau our style of play aber es in that direction Nice und whenever you were saying what I was interested in was saying about the long bus journeys and the distance and altitude obviously that's something dass es eine massive effect ist.

So just stay tuned, guys, at our podcast. Welcome back to our very, very special episode of 4Pass. Our special guest, as you've heard in the first part already, is Mark in Bolivia. Mark, we've heard about how you started off in Bolivia. We've had a few questions about what it's like to play. What's kind of your status now? You're still actively playing, right yes yes i'm i'm 37 now but uh and i didn't think i'd still be playing at this age but i am still still playing i mean just now because of uh coronavirus and because of lockdown we haven't been able to set foot on a rugby pitch for the last six months um which is very frustrating we all want to get back on the pitch but um yeah at the moment i'm still i'm still an active player how is the how is the league or the how is it organized in bolivia i mean you already mentioned La Paz, Santa Cruz und Sucre was die andere place?

00 Ja, so we have now around about 16 teams in Bolivia 16 clubs of those not all of them are able to put out a 15 men's side yet so we have men's and women's rugby junior and mini rugby and then we have 7's and 15's so in terms of the clubs that can put out Wir haben ein 15-a-side Team, wir haben 8. In terms of die Sevens set up, wir haben die Men's und Women's Sevens Teams in all of die Clubs, aber all of them haben Men's Sevens und die Majority of them haben Women's Sevens, und das League ist sowie sowie ruhige Bevölkerung 이용委 complimentary Ich war über die Jahre, weil du schon gesagt, dass es Leute aus Bolivien und Argentinien verändert hat.

Was du denkst, ja, Vivian?

Und dann das natürliche Evolution der Sport in terms of, ich bin sicher, es ist die gleiche in Deutschland, die gleiche all over die Welt, aber als Teams grow, you get certain Clashes and Characters und viele Leute haben sich auf die eigene Team und dann werden sie wieder auf die 聊te.

Und dann in 2009, wir setten die Bolivian Rugby Federation, um, was made up of, uh, people from the clubs, already from the clubs, who volunteered a bit more of their time to work in the Bolivian Rugby Federation.

04 Und start trying to bring together... Were you involved in that? At the Start, no, I am now, but I wasn't involved at the Start, that was, um, Mainly Expells , welche bauen 위에 Rogue зовут Koh timeframe gebracht idé Viveurrection Ich habe viel Arbeit in der Backend, aber es gab keine großen Schritte. So now we can access, through our federation, we can access coaching from South America Rugby for our coaches, for our referees.

04 So that's making a big difference now. We're really starting to see things move forward. But in terms of financial support, there's none. So we don't get any, I mean, it's all voluntary work. People giving up their time through the love of the sport. We are recognised now as a member of the Bolivian Olympic Committee. so hopefully that will lead to some state support in the future but sport funding in Bolivia is very minimal and as we're such a marginal sport it's challenging to get any funding from the government or from the sports ministry Myself, I am involved now as I said in the federation so I've been brought in recently to help set up the mini rugby programme for Bolivia so I coach mini rugby in my club Ich habe mich in Mini Rugby für fünf Jahre jetzt.

Did you say Mini Rugby? Mini Rugby, ja, so mit Kindern. Ah, okay, okay. So das ist unter 8. Er dachte ich etwas anderes. No, no, no, no. I don't know, vielleicht habe ich es falsch.

Some of them sind sehr...

Great, ja. Justgiving.com slash crowdfunding slash Bolivian Rugby. Wir posten auf unsere Facebook page as well.

So, liebe Listener, bleiben Sie bald. Seine Geschichte jetzt in den 100 Fußballlegenden. mit dem talk we've had so far we've asked some more questions for you Mark and we're super appreciative that you take the time one of the things that we were really happy about in the article that was on the BBC was talking about the national team and basically the headline was meet the Scott who captains the Bolivian rugby team I mean if that isn't the headline then I don't know what it is but maybe you could tell us about how that came Das ist ziemlich großartig.

21 Tell us more about that. Has Sinn Carry So you never had any, there was in Bolivian history, sports history, never, a normal rugby match, a normal test match between Bolivia and another nation never took place?

42 No, no, no, never, never. That was the first time we'd ever had an official test match or ever even competed as Bolivia, you know, at a national level against another national side. So it was phenomenal. Dass aircraft informações reusableEpіти Gue weakened 日本 Atari so we got the bus to Asuncion in Paraguay which is a 22 hours journey that's the capital Asuncion? Asuncion is the capital of Paraguay just at the border to Argentina that's right so for you from Santa Cruz where you live it's a 22 hour trip by bus yes for me it was 22 hours for the guys who'd come down from other cities they had to add on 12-16 hours before they even got to Santa Cruz it was a long journey you must really love that sport Mark Ja, es ist ein great sport.

55 As I said to the guys, to get the chance to represent your country. You do anything you can to take that chance, wouldn't you? We also go and play in the first international game for Bolivia. People were going to make it. And that happened in September last year. September last year. More or less 13 months ago. Yeah, that's right. And who's your coach? Who's the coach of the national team and who put him in charge George he still needs to tell us how he became the captain ok yeah ok it's George's first day normally we don't allow him to talk so much I'm so excited I went on a bit with my answer so we got to San Sion in Paraguay we hadn't named a captain by that point we trained for the first day there and then the next day we were going to be getting ready for the match and so our coach Ganze angef Race centrifuges sogar gemeinsam 01 Meu Nein ich Popular decía Reading hurbaστε Gott so it was the first time I've ever been captain straight in at the deep end with the national side but a real privilege and a real honour to do it and did you feel overwhelmed or did you just feel hit in the face or could you believe it?

57 I couldn't believe it and I kind of immediately started thinking okay so I'm going to have to think about how to do the pre-match speech and get everyone motivated because I mean I'm Ich bin ein ganzes Schiedesperson, so ich war mir, wie ich das mache, wie ich das mache, das war ein bisschen ein bisschen ein bisschen ein bisschen.

39 No, no, no. Ja, ich weiß nicht. Ich war einfach ein tolles Story. Du musst du super schaffst zu be der National Team captain. Das ist ziemlich amazing. Und such a journey as well. For me, was an idea of the level? We asked you a bit about the level when you started off. Olivia come from Scotland as a comparison. What was the national team level against Paraguay?

31 So sie haben viel mehr Erfahrung in diesem Sinne. und auch im Moment, ich meine, across South America they're trying to grow rugby at the moment and they're a new league being set up, a kind of super league for franchise teams in South America and Paraguay has one of those new franchise teams so when we went they were just getting ready for their new franchise team so there was kind of a real push in Paraguay to develop the rugby and when we played against them that was really telling I think in terms that most of the players were like us 或者 mittlerweileимости arbeiten sollten gemeinsam Stunden أنا aber nach 25 Minuten unsere Fitness levels dropped off und sie konnten und weitergehen und weitergehen und das ist der Unterschied und das war das war ein sehr komfortabel für sie in der Ende und das war ein ein für uns zu sehen die Level wir wollen und wir wollen und wir wollen und wir wollen und wir wollen und wir wollen internationally Aber ich denke der result ist irrelevant ich denke es war ein big step zu gehen there and that first step and getting awareness out there and stuff like even the fact that we know about you and stuff like that, I mean that's pretty that's like a shockwave you know, people know now that it's there, it exists, you're there I mean really, I mean I think that that's really a test, a testament to the God in front.

22 How was it received in Bolivia the test match back then? Was it in the newspaper then or did you guys get a bit more attention? Not as much as we would have liked. I think we would have liked to get a bit more coverage. I think amongst the rugby community, and there was a few articles here and there in the press, but it would have been good to get a bit more coverage and a bit more notice of it, just in terms of growing the sport. Since then, we've been able to, with the help of South America Rugby, do some training courses for sports journalists in Bolivia, so they learn a bit more about rugby and are able to report on it. Because I think a lot of the times journalists here, because they're unfamiliar with the sport, aren't really sure about how to report on it.

08 Yeah, true. They're a bit scared. I mean, if you're a journalist who never had any idea about rugby and you send them there and it feels awkward for a journalist to talk about the sport, he or she doesn't know. Is there a soccer, is football number one sport in Bolivia? Und was ist jetzt? Was ist Nummer 2, 3, 4 auf der Liste? Just aus der Curiosity. Gut question. So, Football wäre Nummer 1. Nummer 2, vielleicht Volleyball oder Basketball? Ja, okay. Those sind drei big ones, Football, Volleyball, Basketball. In terms of Team Sports, those are the main ones. In terms of the pecking order in South America, just for our listeners, Argentina ist natürlich Nummer 1.

Chile. Chile wird die Nummer 3. Ah, wirklich? Chile hat eine lange Geschichte von Rugby. Die drei Main Rugby teams für ein langes Jahr was Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Brazil has developed a lot in recent years. I think the Olympics in Rio really gave them a focus and they really brought the rugby on. So they're kind of a growing force to be reckoned with in terms of international rugby. And Colombia is the other big country that's growing just now together with Paraguay. So like I said, Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia are all about the same level.

44 And then it's a slight step up to Chile and then another step up to Uruguay and then a massive step up to Argentina. In terms of the development, you just spoke of the Super League thing, is it kind of like a super rugby system like in Australia and New Zealand? Or is it for club sides or for national teams? It's for club sides, for kind of like franchise sides. So if you look at the example in Argentina of Jaguaris, which plays in the super rugby with the teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. So the idea was to set up a level below that, but that was professional, because until that point there wasn't really any professional rugby below that. So the idea is to set up a league below that that's professional and can help bring forward the development of rugby in South America.

33 So initially there was another two franchise teams created in Argentina, one in Uruguay, one in Brazil, one in Paraguay, one in Chile. And then next year a franchise team from Colombia comes in as well. And then I think there's plans to grow it further. Obviously with Coronavirus it's all been thrown up in the air a little bit but that's the plan and there's now a pathway if people are serious about Rugby where they might be able to earn a living out of it without having to leave South America.

27 Durch Lockdown, wir haben, als National Federation, Dort obedience Mostly алгор cadence Manus in touch with Gregor Townsend, National Coach for Scotland. No, never met him before. Did you stalk him on Instagram like Big G? Pretty much. I managed to get his email address, so I wrote to him. I wrote him an email, didn't think he would get back, but he was amazing. He got back, said he'd be really keen to chat to us. So we managed to set up a talk on coaching the attack, and it was phenomenal. It was like an hour and a half that we were chatting to him.

32 Du hast all die Insights jetzt.

21 Amazing. And George was about to ask that earlier, but who's coaching your national team in Bolivia? So our coach is a guy called Pablo Laueso. He's from Argentina originally, but has lived in Bolivia for many years now. He was my coach for many years at my club side here, Santa Cruz Rugby Club. And he's now coaching the national side. But again, he does it on a completely voluntary basis. Und all die travel to the game, for example against Paraguay, was that paid by the players as well? So nobody else paid any money? Yeah, we got a small contribution from the Olympic Committee in Bolivia. We paid part of our ticket costs, but the rest was all paid. Our tickets are costs to stay in Paraguay.

08 The Federation managed to put in a little bit of money and we had to top it up ourselves as players. That's great that you all do that to just play rugby it's crazy we're hoping in the future that the federation will be able to cover the costs of the travel and things like that because we don't want the sport to be a sport that only people who have money can play, we want it to be available for everybody especially the national team if you've got the ability you should be able to play for the national side and don't want finances to be a limiting factor in that so that's part of the goal behind the crowdfunding page is to kind of make that Impf Smack Beim Narr pontos mit der Unterstützung der British Embassy in Bolivien.

Every Saturday I coach my minis via Zoom. So I think there's definitely interest. We need to look at how we can take that to schools now as well and kind of get schools engaged and start building up the interest in rugby. And I guess part of my job going forward will be to put in place a plan where we can introduce people to rugby without putting them at risk because there's a lot of, I guess, the danger of mini-rugby ensaスト peptieren wegenerel blas Нач antim In terms of your playing career and future, I mean, obviously Corona had an impact on that, but you have a one-year-old, one-and-a-half-year-old daughter now, you said, and a partner.

48 If Corona will be over at some stage or if it's more normal again, will you still play on a club level or the national team? Ja, als ich hier in Bolivia und until you sit in a wheelchair ja, until my body doesn't allow me to play anymore I'll carry on playing definitely from my club side and if there's a space for me in the national side then I'll continue playing there as well and if not I'll carry on with my club side And what's your dream? What's your biggest goal in the long run for the Bolivian Rugby Union, for the national team and for the sport there? I think really just to keep growing the sport in the country, for the national team, the men's and women's teams to start competing regularly at international level and to start growing.

44 So we want to challenge ourselves against teams that are round about our same ability. I'd love to see Bolivia as a guest team there one year For our listeners maybe from Germany who don't know that's the oldest Rugby 7 tournament in the world?

31 Yes, that's right The first one, 18... When was it founded? 18-something 1887 Something like that, yeah So I'd love to see a guest side from Bolivia across just experiencing rugby in a different environment in a country where they have a long history of playing rugby and they can kind of get a feel for it I'd love to see that If it doesn't work out for Scotland there's always tournaments here in Germany and Berlin which you can join and we can host some of you guys there's so many we could put you all up keep your costs low we would love to have you in Munich here your accommodation will be free and you're more than welcome we'd love to do that I mean yeah a tour of Europe coming across to Germany and playing there for our players because a lot of our players have never played outside of Bolivia and never experienced rugby in a rugby club that has a long history as a club.

26 So just to let people see what rugby is like in other places and open their eyes a little bit would be a dream come true. Yeah, well now you know where we live and you can always get in touch. Whenever Corona normality returns, then you can get in touch. I had one last question. You already spoke a little bit about a future for Bolivian rugby. I know here, some of the times when myself and Vivian and Big G, we talk about rugby in Germany, the questions of how it goes to the next level. Obviously, for Bolivia, there's multiple levels between where probably rugby is in Germany and where it is now for Bolivia. what do you think would be one or two major goals that you could aim at and things that you could do?

19 Obviously, even just more people knowing about the sport is one thing but is there other things that you can list out or milestones that you can aim at? Yeah, I think for me the next step is really the development of the younger players, so junior rugby the level before you get to the full 15 sides so for the under 18s, under 20s I think it's really important to see that develop further and potentially have a junior league in Bolivia a junior national side and start working with these players from a much younger age so they really get the basic skills of rugby from a much younger age because a lot of the players who currently play have learnt rugby as adults and I think you can do a lot more with players if they learn these skills from a younger age so I think that for me is the next stepping stone for Bolivia es geht um die Abenteuerung zu den nächsten und zu sehen die Entwicklung auf dem Level.

Wir müssen Sie geteilt, so dasselbe die Melrose 7, das ist auch wichtig, aber es gibt den Berlin 7 und den Oktoberfest 7. so so we need somehow the Scottish Rugby Union needs to do something obviously they need to partly fund you that the guys can, that the seventh team can fly over to Europe I think that should be the goal for us within the next five years yeah it would be brilliant to get the men and the women and we will work on that together and have a beer together sounds great, that sounds like a plan George Okay.

So yeah, watch this space. Amazing. Awesome. Okay, Marc, thanks for your time. I think we three are really appreciative of you coming onto the pod and we were really looking forward to that day. And we're definitely going to send some money over to your website. Definitely. And I hope some more people, some listeners of the pod will do that as well. Every pound, every dollar, every euro Helps, um, yeah, to fund the guys in Bolivia and their passion for rugby. I think it's a good bye from us then. Thank you so much for having me on. It's been great to share the story of Bolivian Rugby with you. Thank you for your interest.

44 Um, I really appreciate it. And anything else you want to know about rugby here, just give me a shout. Yeah, thanks for getting in touch and really, yeah, it was really, really interesting and many, many thanks and hopefully see you in Germany then for those paints at Big G's, promising to pay for. I look forward to it. I can't guarantee I'll play in the Sevens, but I'll come and drink the beer. Neither can we. We definitely can't guarantee that either. Okay. Thanks very much. Have a good day, mate. And we will stop now. Bye-bye, listeners. Talk to you next week.
